Bernard Robert
Carroll Jr.
Feb 25, 1937 — May 12, 2018
Dilley
Bernard "Bob" Robert Carroll, Jr. entered into rest May 12, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Candace Carroll, son, Christopher William Carroll and wife Nicole, daughter, Laura Jane Perez and husband Robert, son, Bernard Robert Carroll, III, sister Mary Gwen Hunter and husband William, and brother William P. Carroll and wife, Beth. Bob was very proud of his seven grandchildren, Isaiah Perez, Ben Carroll, Luke Carroll, Isabel Perez, Caden Carroll, Jacob Carroll and Riley Carroll, and his two step-grandchildren, Blossom and Bryan Perez. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, James H Carroll and wife, Peggy and his parents.
Bob, or Bobby as he was often known, was born February 25, 1937 to Barney and Gwendolyn Carroll and was raised in Dilley, Texas. He spent many hours at his Uncle Will and Aunt Jane Nagy's ranch as he was growing up. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, later graduating with an education degree from Sul Ross State University. He worked in retail in his early years and then began teaching, first in Batesville, Texas, then Ted Flores Elementary in Pearsall and then finally at Dilley Elementary from which he retired. In 1985, he was ordained as the Most Reverend Deacon for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dilley. Working in his parish, Deacon Bob assisted in all areas for which he had been ordained. He took great pride in being able to perform the marriage ceremonies for his son Chris and his daughter Laura. He was able to baptize six of his seven grandchildren as well. He formally retired from the Diaconate in 2017.
Bob could always be counted upon for a smile and a hug for everyone he met. He was referred to as the "Hugging Deacon" by many of his parishioners. He never knew a stranger and never forgot a name. His elementary children all received a "special" name, which usually rhymed with their last name. He will be greatly missed.
