Charles Benson returned to our Lord and Savior on November 15, 2021. Born on October 28, 1941 in Hunt, Texas to Edward Lee Benson and Claribel Young. The oldest of 3 children brother David Lee Benson and Brenda Benson. Charlie, as he was known to many, attended Hunt Schools through the 8 th grade and finished his schooling at Kerrville High School. Throughout his time in school, he worked at the local gas station in Hunt and later at T J Moore Lumber and Furniture Store.
Upon graduation Charlie enlisted in the US Airforce in 1960 and served until 1966. He did his training in San Antonio, Texas and was first stationed in Salina, Kansas. From Salina he was transferred to Germany and then was stationed in Tripoli, Libya.
At the completion of his military service, he was employed at Moonie Aircraft in Kerrville and later Swearing Aviation in San Antonio.
On October 28, 1967 he married Myrta Ann Thompson (divorced in 1987) and had two children Sammi Kay in 1970 and Tom Alan in 1971. From 1967 when he married, he began working at Union Stockyards in San Antonio with his Father-in-law and began a long and adventurous career in the Cattle Business. Later moving to Cotulla, Texas and operating the Cotulla Livestock Commission Company as well as assisting in managing ranching operations with the Thompson Family. Throughout his life he operated the Auction in Cotulla, Texas and assisted in the Pearsall Livestock, The Shiner Ranch in Frio County, the Mendiola Ranch, Pescadita Ranch and Wallcot Ranch in Webb County, El Cid Ranch in Big Wells, Texas, Thompson Ranches in Zavala County and the Flat Lake Ranch in Hatch, New Mexico.
In 1992 he remarried Nelta Jenkins and returned to live in Cotulla.
He is Preceded in death by his parents Edward and Claribel Benson, brother David, daughter Sammi, wife Myrta Ann Thompson and wife Nelta Jenkins-Benson. He is survived by his son Tom and Sandra Benson, Sister Brenda Jennings and children Steven, Anthony and Kimberlee, and Niece Rhetta Thompson and Nephew Harry (Chip) Thompson.
Throughout his life he was an active member of the Young Farmers association, LaSalle County Farm Bureau, LaSalle Booster Club, Masonic Lodge 892 where he is a 3 rd degree Master Mason and a 32 nd Degree Scottish Rites Mason and the Shriners of San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the First Baptist Church, 201 Frio, Cotulla, TX. 78014 or to the American Legion Post 409, P.O. Box 96, Cotulla, TX, 78014.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 22, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Cotulla from 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 22, 2021, at 2:00p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Cotulla. Interment will follow at the Cotulla Cemetery.
