A Life Well Lived for Christ

Julia M. Flores, 89 of Cotulla, entered rest on November 27, 2020. She was born on December 26, 1930 in Woodward, Tx to Martin Mata and Dionicia Mendoza Mata and raised by her Grandmother, Juanita Mendoza. She is preceded in death by her husband, Luis G. Flores, Sr., daughter, Mary Lou Flores, parents, sister, Juanita Alvarez and brothers, Ignacio Mata and Matias Mata and granddaughter MaryAnn Tellez.

She is survived by her sons Francisco Flores and wife Nora of Gardendale and Luis Flores,Jr  and wife Elsa of Cotulla.  She is also survived by grandchildren Isaias Tellez, Michael Tellez, Eugene Tellez, Alex Tellez, Paul Tellez, Michele Tellez Lambrecht, Frankie Flores, Elida (Elda) Huron, Dolly Oltivero, Hannah Hernandez, Luis Flores,III, Elaizah Flores and Elisabeth Flores, over 30 great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julia left a great legacy behind.  During the 1970's when the Christian Charismatic movement hit the United States, Julia, along with other local families were touched by the Holy Spirit and were made to choose between worshipping quietly at their current church or leaving their church to worship freely.  They chose to leave their church and started the first non-denominational church in Cotulla by gathering at Julia's back yard under the huge tree.  They would bring in preachers from out of town and worship would be led by Luis Sanchez and Alejandro Romo.  They would praise the Lord as loud and freely as the Holy Spirit led them. This went on for many years and to this day many families can trace their Christian roots to that back yard under the huge tree.

Julia was a great example of a woman of God always showing her love for others.  She loved reading and studying the Bible and eventually went on to become an Ordained Minister.  It didn't matter if Julia was living in Pearsall, Dilley or Cotulla, she never stopped holding her Bible study groups in her living room.   Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love she had for her friends and family allowed her to live a glorious 90 years.
